Location of Buckley Cottage, Lower
Batson, Salcombe
Lower Batson
is a small, peaceful hamlet in an idyllic position at the
head of a creek on the Kingsbridge Estuary. It is
just 10 minutes’ level walk "up-river" from Salcombe and
surrounded by the rolling South Hams countryside (an Area
of Outstanding Natural
Beauty).
There are
many delightful walks nearby - some straight from the
cottage, including on land owned by the National
Trust. Half a dozen idyllic children’s beaches are
effectively a short walk
away.
The cottage
was originally a sail-maker's cottage and had a "sail
loft" upstairs with its own entrance. It is
reputedly where the infamous Judge Jeffries stayed when
he sat at the Court at Batson Hall Farm in the
seventeenth century.
